How does Slime Develop in a Pet Water Fountain?
Generally, pet water fountain slime is a “bacterial biofilm” that develops when certain microorganisms form an attachment to the object's surface by secreting a slimy, glue-like substance. In simple terms, slime is produced as protection by bacteria from cleaning chemicals.
Where Does "Bacterial Biofilm" Come From?
Biofilm will probably be found anywhere there is a surface with a combination of moisture and nutrients. Bacteria in your pet water fountain feed on microscopic particles deposited in the water from saliva and food particles dropped into the water by a drinking cat or dog. Thus, a pet water fountain will likely have slime on its surface.
How do I Prevent Slime in a Pet Water Fountain?
To prevent slime in the water fountain, please follow the steps below:
- Place the fountain in a well-aired room, away from direct sunlight. When the water level gets low, don’t just top it up, but rinse and refill the fountain instead.
- Give the fountain interior a quick wipe once a week and a thorough cleaning every two weeks. Things that can help you to clean include: Baking Soda, Food Grade Mild Detergent, and Diluted Vinegar.
- Change the filters every two weeks. If you live in a humid climate or have more than one pet, please do it more frequently.
